Have you been searching for an easy, delicious, and healthier chocolate cake recipe? Look no further, and say goodbye to boxed and store bought cakes forever!
This recipe was shared with me by my dear friend Lenita. It uses fresh, wholesome ingredients like olive oil and buttermilk, and best of all, it’s free from artificial preservatives and other unwanted additives.
What makes this cake extra special isn’t just the ingredients, it’s the friend who gave it to me. Miss you, Lenita! I’ll never forget how excited you were when you told me about using olive oil and buttermilk. It also stands out because it bakes at a low temperature of just 300°F, resulting in an incredibly moist and tender cake.
This recipe is perfect for birthdays or any time you want to treat yourself or someone you love. Once you try it, you’ll never want to go back to your old chocolate cake recipe.

Best Chocolate Cake Recipe
Servings: 9-12 (two 9‑inch round cake layers)
Bake Temperature: 300°F
Ingredients
- 2 cups all‑purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Hersey’s or any brand)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup olive water
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat & Prep Pans
Preheat your oven to 300°F (about 150°C). Grease two 9‑inch round cake pans (or line with parchment). - Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. - Mix Wet Ingredients
In the same bowl, add eggs, olive oil, buttermilk, hot water and vanilla extract. Mix for 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth. The batter will be thin, that’s okay, it helps with moistness. - Bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in preheated oven at 300°F for about 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. - Cool
Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to finish cooling completely before frosting. Enjoy!
Recommended Frosting: Hershey’s “Perfectly Chocolate” Chocolate Frosting
This is the go-to chocolate frosting from Hershey’s, known for its creamy texture and deep cocoa flavor. It’s especially great if you’re using Hershey’s Cocoa Powder in the cake itself for a fully Hershey-themed dessert.
✅ Ingredients
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- ⅔ cup Hershey’s Cocoa
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- ⅓ cup milk (add more if needed)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
🧁 Instructions
- Mix Cocoa & Butter
In a medium bowl, stir together melted butter and Hershey’s Cocoa until smooth. - Add Sugar & Milk
Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating with a hand mixer (or whisk) to spreading consistency. Add more milk as needed, a tablespoon at a time. - Add Vanilla
Stir in vanilla. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
